Southern California Edison Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program Claim Deadline: Monday, Nov. 30, 2026.
|
|
|
|
|
LA Fire Justice reports January 7, 2027, is the cutoff for personal injury, emotional distress and wrongful death suits
|
The group says that deadline — January 7, 2027, two years after the fire began — applies to personal injury, emotional distress and wrongful death claims. California law generally allows two years to sue over an injury or death caused by another’s wrongful act or neglect.

CCF Press Conference Highlights New Wildfire Testing Laws and Urgent Insurance Deadlines
|
The California Community Foundation (CCF) held a press conference highlighting AB 1642 and AB 1795, which take effect January 1, 2027, establishing statewide wildfire contamination testing and clearance standards alongside stronger insurance protections. EFRU presented research showing 6 in 10 homes remained unsafe after remediation.
Important for homeowners: if you or your insurance company only remediated and never tested for lead, asbestos, or CAM 17 metals, it is imperative to test to ensure your home doesn’t have remaining toxicity. EFRU post remediation map indicates 96% of remediated homes still had lead and 36% of remediated homes still had asbestos dust due to cleaning rather than rigorous restoration. Contact your insurer and reopen your claim to get indoor testing to confirm your home has reached safety clearance before the insurance statute of limitations on January 7, 2027. Learn more
Important for Landlords and Renters: AB 1642's new lead and asbestos clearance standards will establish how landlords meet their wildfire-related safety obligations under SB 610. Landlords who previously remediated without lead and asbestos testing should contact their insurers immediately about reopening or supplementing their claims. Those who never filed a claim should act now. Otherwise, they risk paying for necessary testing and additional remediation out of pocket.

California Disaster Rebuilding Assistance Program Provides New Funding Options for Disaster Survivors
|
The Disaster Rebuilding Assistance Program offers financing tools to help reduce the cost of rebuilding, connect homeowners with trusted lenders, and improve loan options for low- to moderate-income households, Gov. Gavin Newsom said.
Announced earlier this year, the program was developed in response to feedback from survivors of the Eaton and Palisades fires, according to the governor. The $100 million program was funded through the state budget.
Newsom also signed legislation targeting smoke remediation and extending mortgage protections for wildfire survivors from 12 months to 24 months.

Altadena Builds Back Foundation’s New Investment Speeds Up Rebuilding
|
The Altadena Builds Back Foundation (ABBF) has announced a $4 million investment in Altadena Land Initiatives Corporation, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization to help fire survivors as they rebuild. This investment, which funds zero-interest construction gap loans, will support an innovative new model to help fire survivors rebuild and return home.
After the Eaton wildfire, many Altadena homeowners discovered that insurance, if available at all, paired with other financial resources was not enough to cover the full cost of rebuilding. ALI's Gap Rebuild Program helps close that financial shortfall, so families can rebuild now without taking on traditional debt.

Check out a free website, built by a local student, that turns local hikes into 3D maps you can spin and explore, with the plants and animals you'll meet along the way. Help Keep Altadena Together
|
Altagether is recruiting new Neighborhood Captains across Altadena. Captains each support a small part of the community by connecting with neighbors, sharing useful information and resources, and helping people stay connected throughout recovery.
We often have multiple volunteers working together in the same area as co-captains, sharing the responsibility and supporting one another. Altagether provides Captains with tools, information, support, and a network of fellow volunteers.
You don’t need to be a recovery expert or have all the answers. What matters most is that you care about your neighborhood and want to help build a stronger, more connected Altadena.

10 Tips to Make Sure Your Contractor Measures Up
|
- Hire only state-licensed contractors.
- Use the Find My Licensed Contractor feature at www.cslb.ca.gov to locate a licensed contractor in your area.
- Check a contractor's license number online at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 800-321-CSLB (2752).
- Get at least three bids and check references.
- Make sure all project expectations are in writing and only sign the contract if you completely understand the terms. (Watch the workshop LAFLA and construction law firm Cox Castle recently hosted on navigating rebuild contracts, contractor negotiations, and homeowner legal protections)
- Confirm that the contractor has workers' compensation insurance for employees.
- Avoid paying more than 10% down or $1,000, whichever is less.* Avoid paying in cash.
- Avoid letting payments get ahead of the work.
- Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project, including all payments.
- Avoid making the final payment until you're satisfied with the job.
*There is an exception to this rule for about a small number of contractors who have filed a blanket performance and payment bond with the Registrar. This information is noted on the contractor's license detail page on CSLB's website.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
All changes to the contract, or "change orders," need to be in writing and signed by both parties.
Homeowners waive their three-day right to cancel (or five-day right to cancel if they're 65 or older) if they sign a service and repair contract, which is different from a standard home improvement contract. (Service and repair contracts are usually for emergency repair work where the consumer initiated the contact.)

The RISE Homes Program helps Californians rebuild energy-efficient, all-electric homes.
|
To assist Californians in need, RISE Homes (Rebuilding Incentives for Sustainable Electric Homes) was created to help rebuild smarter and safer. RISE Homes is a California program offering financial incentives and support to help residents rebuild energy-efficient, all-electric homes after a natural disaster. All-electric rebuilds provide long-term affordability with high-efficiency, low-maintenance equipment. Not only do they save money, but they improve air quality, reduce fire risk, and reduce emissions to achieve our state’s climate goals.
On average, RISE Homes incentives range from $7,000 to $10,000 for rebuilding a single-family home with electric energy solutions; homeowners who qualify for equity incentives can receive as much as 50% higher amounts. Our trained coordinators will help walk you through the process of applying for incentives to maximize savings and choose what’s best for you and your family. Get more info on how to qualify; visit RiseHomesCA.com or call 833-202-3654.

EFRU has partnered with Surviving Structures – EF Recovery, Department of Angels, and seven other organizations across the Eaton and Palisades fire communities to identify which households are being reached—and which are still disconnected. The survey asks you to provide the address of your fire-affected home so we can match it to the email address we already have for you. This will help us identify outreach gaps, avoid duplication, and reach residents who may still be missing critical recovery information.
Your privacy is protected. Only de-identified information will be shared with the Department of Angels for outreach mapping; your identity remains with EFRU. Click here
