Altadena Builds Back Foundation’s New Investment Speeds Up Rebuilding
The Altadena Builds Back Foundation (ABBF) has announced a $4 million investment in Altadena Land Initiatives Corporation, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization to help fire survivors as they rebuild. This investment, which funds zero-interest construction gap loans, will support an innovative new model to help fire survivors rebuild and return home.

After the Eaton wildfire, many Altadena homeowners discovered that insurance, if available at all, paired with other financial resources was not enough to cover the full cost of rebuilding. ALI's Gap Rebuild Program helps close that financial shortfall, so families can rebuild now without taking on traditional debt.

Help Keep Altadena Together
Altagether is recruiting new Neighborhood Captains across Altadena. Captains each support a small part of the community by connecting with neighbors, sharing useful information and resources, and helping people stay connected throughout recovery.

We often have multiple volunteers working together in the same area as co-captains, sharing the responsibility and supporting one another. Altagether provides Captains with tools, information, support, and a network of fellow volunteers.

You don’t need to be a recovery expert or have all the answers. What matters most is that you care about your neighborhood and want to help build a stronger, more connected Altadena.

Learn more and get involved at altagether.org/join.

Deep ties to Altadena, Pasadena, and communities impacted by the Eaton Fire are strongly preferred.

10 Tips to Make Sure Your Contractor Measures Up
Provided by the Contrators State License Board https://www.cslb.ca.gov/
  1. Hire only state-licensed contractors.

  2. Use the Find My Licensed Contractor feature at www.cslb.ca.gov to locate a licensed contractor in your area.

  3. Check a contractor's license number online at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 800-321-CSLB (2752).

  4. Get at least three bids and check references.

  5. Make sure all project expectations are in writing and only sign the contract if you completely understand the terms. (Watch the workshop LAFLA and construction law firm Cox Castle recently hosted on navigating rebuild contracts, contractor negotiations, and homeowner legal protections)

  6. Confirm that the contractor has workers' compensation insurance for employees.

  7. Avoid paying more than 10% down or $1,000, whichever is less.* Avoid paying in cash.

  8. Avoid letting payments get ahead of the work.

  9. Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project, including all payments.

  10. Avoid making the final payment until you're satisfied with the job.

*There is an exception to this rule for about a small number of contractors who have filed a blanket performance and payment bond with the Registrar. This information is noted on the contractor's license detail page on CSLB's website.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
All changes to the contract, or "change orders," need to be in writing and signed by both parties.

Homeowners waive their three-day right to cancel (or five-day right to cancel if they're 65 or older) if they sign a service and repair contract, which is different from a standard home improvement contract. (Service and repair contracts are usually for emergency repair work where the consumer initiated the contact.)

Interested in Indoor Smoke Testing and Remediation?
As part of CONSORTIUM, nonprofit partner GER3 is testing for interior wildfire-related contaminants at properties in the Eaton and Palisades areas. They will also be offering comprehensive indoor remediation to a few properties enrolled in this testing program. Both programs are offered at no cost to homeowners. Applicants will be prioritized based on need and ability to remediate themselves. If you are interested in being considered, please complete the form here. Spots are limited, please sign up in the next few days to be screened for eligibility.

Surveys & Share Your Story
What is the Altadena People's Plan?
The Altadena People's Plan is a community-driven initiative to create a shared vision for Altadena's future, led by the Altadena Wildfire Response Coalition together with Project Passion, My Tribe Rise, and Dena Heals, with technical advisors Kounkuey Design Initiative, LA Voice, and Bet Tzedek, and funded by United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

Since August 2025, the coalition has worked with nonprofits, community leaders, residents, and youth, with particular emphasis on marginalized and communities of color, to identify critical needs around funding, legal support, planning, and long-term investment.

The first draft of the Altadena People's Plan launched on October 6. The survey is still open, and your responses will guide future updates. We are collecting project ideas for housing, public space, culture, infrastructure, and economic development.

After the fire, did your insurance company help you or hurt you?
Eaton and Palisades fire survivors, in partnership with a UCLA research team, are building the nation’s first public record of how insurers treated us: who paid, delayed, denied or underpaid. Every experience matters, including if your insurer did right by you. Your identity stays private. The patterns become public. Those patterns can drive investigations, enforcement, litigation, journalism and insurance reform.

1,100+ survivors have contributed. Takes 15 minutes. Available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean.

Take the survey now so your experience counts when your insurer is measured. FireSurvey.org

We'll ask about your experiences during and after the fires, the emotional support available through schools and communities, and what kinds of support would be helpful in the future. Participants receive a $50 Visa gift card as a thank-you for their time.

EFRU 2-Minute Survey: We Need Your Help to Reach Every Fire-Affected Household
EFRU has partnered with Surviving Structures – EF Recovery, Department of Angels, and seven other organizations across the Eaton and Palisades fire communities to identify which households are being reached—and which are still disconnected.
The survey asks you to provide the address of your fire-affected home so we can match it to the email address we already have for you. This will help us identify outreach gaps, avoid duplication, and reach residents who may still be missing critical recovery information.

Your privacy is protected. Only de-identified information will be shared with the Department of Angels for outreach mapping; your identity remains with EFRU. Click here

Help Create Post-Wildfire Community Artwork
Drop-in Cyanotype Session #2:
NEW DATE: Sunday, Oct. 11 • 11:30am-2:30pm
Arlington Garden
Pasadena-based artist Kate Lain invites community members affected in any way by the 2025 Eaton Fire to help create a 50-foot textile stream that will be temporarily installed at Arlington Garden in Pasadena in Spring 2027.

Lain’s new community art project, titled Watershed, is grounded in the idea that creating art in community with one another and with the environment can be healing. Fire-affected community members are invited to be a part of Watershed in two ways: 1) by participating in free, hands-on, outdoor art-making sessions that will take place at Arlington Garden this fall and coming winter; and 2) by submitting responses and images through an online form. Responses to the form, in written and image form, will be used in the development and creation of the final artwork.

At the fall art-making sessions, attendees will use the cyanotype process to create images and designs on smaller fabric pieces that will later be sewn together into a 50-foot textile stream. Cyanotype is an analog photographic process that utilizes sunlight and water and typically results in blue-and-white images. Winter events will focus on assembling, embellishing, and hand-sewing the individual fabric components together to create the final artwork.

Registration isn't required but is encouraged. Sign up here.

24th Annual Women for Justice Breakfast
Thursday, Oct. 22 • 8-10am
Pasadena Hilton
Women for Justice Breakfast is the new name for our longtime Women for Racial Justice Breakfast, reflecting a broader invitation into YWCA Glendale and Pasadena's work to eliminate racism, empower women, and advance peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Now in its 24th year, this signature gathering brings together community leaders and supporters who believe safer families and stronger communities require both racial justice and gender equity.

As YWCA Glendale and Pasadena mark 100 years of service to our community, we are proud to welcome Michelle Gaskill-Hames, BSN, MHA, as our 2026 Women for Racial Justice Honoree and keynote speaker.
