RESOURCE TO HELP AVOID CONTRACTOR SCAMS
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and Winston & Strawn LLP have created a comprehensive guide to help disaster survivors safely hire contractors, review rebuild contracts, and avoid construction scams.

BuildNotes.LA – Wholesale Marketplace for Wildfire Rebuild
BuildNotes.LA is a wholesale marketplace supporting the LA wildfire rebuild. It helps homeowners access building materials and products at more transparent, wholesale pricing during the reconstruction process.

If you are planning to purchase materials and products for your home after you’ve already signed your construction contract, consider including an allowances section in your contract. This can help ensure that any cost savings from material pricing are passed directly back to you, rather than being absorbed by your builder.

Guide to Cleaning Up Contaminated Soil
from Leadership Pasadena
Why is soil testing important after wildfires? What do you do if your soil has high levels of lead? After a wildfire, ash and soot from burned vegetation and structures can spread beyond the fire area, settling on soil, sand, and other outdoor surfaces. These materials may contain metals and harmful contaminants that, at high levels, can pose risks to human health and the environment. Read more at: ARCG.IS/01mDj5 Step 1. Soil Testing Getting your soil tested is important for rebuilding safely after wildfires, even if some or all soil has been removed from a property. Lead, asbestos, arsenic, and other harmful substances can still be found in the soil and are harmful to everyone, especially for kids, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Note: There is no safe number when it comes to lead in your blood. Where to start: Free soil testing kits are available. Check with UCLA, USC, & County of Los Angeles Public Health Department's Soil Testing Program for drop-off locations & more information. Scan with your phone to schedule soil-testing or visit: PublicHealth.LACounty.Gov/Media/Wildfire-Soil-Testing/ Step 2 Results: If your test results show high levels of lead, there are many ways you can clean up your soil. To better understand your results, visit County of Los Angeles's Public Health Department's website (linked above) under the section titled: Guidance for Results. Consult a certified industrial hygienist for follow-up guidance if soil test results are higher than 80ppm for lead or if you're worried about other toxins.
Remediation Roadmap. Step 1: Test your soil Purpose: identifies specific hazards and protects workers. Step 2: Professional Remediation If remediation is needed, hiring a licensed abatement company required. Step 3: Post-remediation Testing Purpose: to see if the pollutants are successfully removed. Rebuild Construction You can still test your soil - It's never too late! Options: Soil Capping (Mulch Over) Putting a layer of clean soil or mulch over contaminated soil, gardens, or pathways to prevent contact. Geotextile Barrier Using special fabric to create a barrier in the ground that blocks contact. Soil Removal and Replacement Digging up contaminated soil and replacing it with clean fill. Bioremediation Use living organism (plants, worms, fugus, etc. to absorb or trap chemicals from the soil with their roots. Consult a certified industrial hygienist for the best remediation options • Hire a licensed abatement company to conduct remediation

After public outcry, PUSD Board votes to save some trees slated for removal
Pasadena residents fighting a school district plan to remove nearly 200 trees scored a win Thursday, June 18, night. Pasadena Unified School District officials had said 193 trees across 11 campuses need to be cut down to clean up soil contaminated by the Eaton Fire. But on Thursday, the district’s board voted unanimously to attempt to save up to 57 of those trees.

The adopted motion is no guarantee trees will be saved, but directs staff to evaluate other ways to remediate soil around certain mature, protected trees.

There is opportunity for public comment at the next PUSD Board Meeting, which will be held at 4pm Thursday, June 25 at the ELBIE J. HICKAMBOTTOM BOARD ROOM #236, 351 S. HUDSON AVENUE, PASADENA, CA 91101. See the agenda here

Altadenans! Come together to celebrate our nation’s 250th Birthday at Owen Brown’s gravesite on July 4th. The Owen Brown Gravesite Committee has gathered Brown family descendants, and representatives from community partners Altadena Heritage, Chamber of Commerce, Pasadena Unified School District, and Pasadena Civil War Roundtable to read salient excerpts from the “Declaration.” Ahead of its time, it called not only for ending slavery, but also for universal rights for all, including women.

In the context of the Eaton Fire and Southern California Edison’s Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program, non-economic losses refer to compensation for personal, intangible harms that are not directly measurable in dollars, including emotional distress, grief, mental anguish, trauma, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-financial impacts resulting from the fire.

The purpose of this workshop is educational. It is designed to provide information, answer questions, and help community members better understand the considerations involved in deciding whether to file a Non-Economic Loss claim before the upcoming deadline.

The program will feature a panel of attorneys with experience in disaster-related litigation who will discuss:

  • What non-economic loss claims are and who may qualify
  • Reasons individuals may choose to file a claim
  • Reasons individuals may decide not to file a claim
  • Important deadlines and legal considerations
  • Questions to ask when evaluating legal representation
  • How legal claims interact with insurance recovery and other compensation programs
