Direct Cash Grant Applications for Altadena Renters Open May 11, 2026
CJWLA, in partnership with survivor-led Altadena Tenants Union, the Altadena Community Land Trust, and nearly a dozen community partners, are joining together to launch a first-of-its-kind, long-term direct cash assistance program to support specific households directly impacted by the Eaton Fire.

Direct Cash for Altadena Fire Recovery provides meaningful, sustained support to vulnerable, renter households.

The program will provide direct cash support to selected participants on a monthly schedule with no restrictions on use of funds. In addition to financial assistance, participants will have access to optional supportive services aimed at strengthening long-term recovery.

All eligible applicants will be entered into a selection pool, from which 30 households will be randomly selected to join the program. Selected participants will receive $36,000 over 24 months. As funding becomes available, we intend to expand the pool of recipients.

To learn about eligibility, how to apply, and sign up for information sessions about this program, go to https://www.ncjwla.org/resources/direct-cash-for-altadena-fire-recovery

Do you have a tree story? Share it May 14-17
I'm Mona Patterson, a third-generation resident of Altadena and science journalist. Moved by the loss of my family’s mulberry and citrus trees after the Eaton Fire, I set out to document the stories of others in Altadena who share a similar connection to a tree—whether it was lost in the fire or is still standing today. The Altadena Tree Stories project is an oral and visual archive dedicated to preserving the memories of Altadena’s trees, and the lives and communities that grew alongside them. I joined up with landscape photographer Andrea Gaffney who brings her visual storytelling perspectives to help create an archive that demonstrates community resilience.
  • We are looking to speak with people and photograph trees May 14-17.
  • There is no fee for the documentation.
  • The interview and photography will require about an hour of your time.
  • As a small token of gratitude, you will receive a small instant print of your tree.
Sign up for the tree project here.

LA County Treasurer and Tax Collector Liz Ginsberg has committed to reviewing individual penalty cancellation requests with care. If you cannot meet the April 30 deadline, please file a request.

As she told EFSN: "While state law limits the authority of the Tax Collector and requires that each penalty cancellation request be evaluated individually, our office is committed to carrying out this review process timely, with care, fairness, and an understanding of the challenges wildfire survivors continue to navigate."

EFSN is also pressing the Treasurer to commit to more specific guidance for survivors who have lost their homes.
