Daron Nefcy is an Emmy-winning creator and executive producer of the original hit series "Star vs. The Forces of Evil,” one of Disney’s most- watched animated series. Altadena Poets Laureate - Fire and ICE: A Haibun Poetry Workshop with Teresa Mei Chuc
Saturday, Oct. 11 • 11am-1pm
Main Library Community Room

In a workshop led by former Altadena Poet Laureate Teresa Mei Chuc, participants will write a haibun reflecting on experiences after the recent fires in Altadena and the Palisades, on ICE raids in Los Angeles, or other issues that are currently impacting them.
 
All workshops are free and open to the public with priority being given to Altadena residents. Participating poets, as well as other community members, are invited to share their work at monthly open mics.
 
Supported by Friends of the Altadena Library, the Altadena Library Foundation, Octavia's Bookshelf, Academy of American Poets, and Poets & Writers.

Community Women Vital Voices and the Altadena Library, in partnership with cityLAB-UCLA, invite you to The Black Legacy Voice Echoes Our Truth: Pasadena/Altadena Community, on view at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library from October 12–31, 2025.
 
First presented at the Eaton Fire Rebuild Senior Summit, this community-rooted exhibition uplifts Black history, resilience, and cultural legacy through family stories, archival research, and interactive storytelling. Anchored by the Legacy Wall and a participatory mapping installation, the exhibition offers space for reflection, connection, and care.

Altadena Poets Laureate - Fire and ICE Reading + Open Mic

Community Healing with the Music of Capoeira
Saturday, Oct. 18 • 10am-12pm

We are coming together with the music of Capoeira as a tool for community and healing in the wake of the Eaton Fire. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form with community, music, and movement at its core. Thousands and thousands of people of all types the world over can attest to capoeira’s transformative and healing power. Please join us one and all.
 
You will need to sign an ALD liability waiver to participate.
 
About the artists
About UCA Los Angeles: Founded in 2004. We are Eaton fire folk who lost our home and community in the Eaton Fire. Prior to that, Guatambu and the rest of the team have been sharing the art form of capoeira with the greater Los Angeles area and Altadena for over 20 years.

Join us for a fun and educational fall program in partnership with LA Compost at the Main Library! Families will learn how to compost carved pumpkins, save pumpkin seeds, and explore other sustainable ways to use pumpkins. We'll also have creepy crawly-themed sensory bins for kids to enjoy. You are invited to become a part of the history of photography. Altadena Photographers and Altadena Library are excited to host this one-of a kind event featuring a vintage camera installation, tintype photography demonstration, photo exhibit, and speakers from Altadena Photographers.

Kite Making Workshop
Saturday, Oct. 25 • 1-3pm
Altadena Library at Loma Alta Park

Come join us at Loma Alta Park to learn how to make your own stingray (rhombus-shaped) kite! Kitemaker Yaeun Stevie Choi will lead kids aged 8-12 through the kite-making process using biodegradable materials such as paper, bamboo and glue. The kite will be decorated with sustainability in mind: by using each others’ scraps. Moreover, participants will be guided in writing a letter addressed to our planet. They will write and draw about the habits they hope to cultivate in taking care of our planet such as leaving no trace, reducing usages of plastic, planting seeds, and more. The letter will be attached to the tail of the kite to be sent off!
 
Please make sure each participant is accompanied by an adult. Registration required.
