Keni Arts Exhibition: Beauty for Ashes Exhibition Artist Reception
Friday, May 2 • 6:30-8pm
Altadena Main Library, 600 E Mariposa
|
“Art is a process more than a product. It doesn't start with the paint, nor does art end with the picture. True art starts in the heart of God, then flows through the artist and continues in the viewer, allowing them to interact with the body of work. Art can be a powerful voice for change. It can be enlightening, but it can also be challenging.”- Keni Arts
For nearly five decades, Keni Arts has documented the soul of communities through his vibrant plein air paintings. From the streets of America to the landscapes of Africa, Brazil, and beyond, his brush has captured the essence of people and place. Yet, nowhere has he felt more at home than in the ‘Denas’—Altadena and Pasadena—where this artistic journey has been deeply rooted since 1977.
But on January 7, 2025, the Eaton Fire changed everything. Over 9,000 homes and businesses were lost, including cherished sites Keni had once immortalized in watercolor. Now, in a powerful act of resilience and artistry, he returns to these sites to create Beauty For Ashes—a series that reimagines Altadena in its moment of transition, documenting destruction, renewal, and hope.

Altadena Poets Laureate:
Into the Woods: Using Fairy Tales to Tell Your Story with Elline Lipkin
Tuesday, May 6, 2025 • 5:30-7:30pm Altadena Main Library Community Room
|
Fairy tales have been around for centuries because they capture something essential about the human experience. In this workshop, we will use fairy tales and their tropes as inspiration to write about our own lives. Thinking about animals, the forest, the seasons, and the symbolic characters we find in fairy tales, we will explore the persona poem and the elegy, among other exercises meant to spark the imagination, to celebrate and commemorate Altadena, and to process grief.
The workshop is free and open to the public – all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Please bring a notebook and a pen if you can; otherwise, we will provide paper and writing utensils for you. Tuesday, May 6, 2025 marks four months since the Eaton fire devastated our community. We extend a special invitation to Altadena and Pasadena residents as well as to others who have been impacted by the fire. Please join us to write and process your experience and our community’s resilience.
The workshop will be led by Elline Lipkin, PhD, a poet, nonfiction writer, and academic, who, until the Eaton fire, was an Altadena resident for thirteen years. She holds an MFA and PhD in Literature and Creative Writing and has been a Research Scholar with UCLA's Center for the Study of Women. Author of two books, her third, Girl in a Forest is forthcoming in October 2025. For two years (2016-18), she served her community as Altadena Poet Laureate and editor of the Altadena Poetry Review.

SuperAdobe Building Methods Monday, May 12 • 5-6:30pm Main Library Reading Court
|
Dastan Khalili and other facilitators from CalEarth, an educational non-profit, will teach us about the SuperAdobe building method that is environmentally friendly and fire resistant. SuperAdobe is a form of earth bag architecture developed by architect and CalEarth founder Nader Khalili. Using long sandbags ("SuperAdobe Bags"), barbed wire, on-site earth and a few tools, Khalili devised a revolutionary building system that integrates traditional earth architecture with contemporary global safety requirements, and passes severe earthquake code tests in California. This technology has been published by NASA, endorsed by the United Nations, featured in countless world media outlets, and awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004. It comes from years of meditation, hands-on research and development. Inspired by traditional earth architecture in the deserts of Iran and adapted for modern usage. Simplified so that anyone can build.

Marcus Stroman Scholarship 2025
Deadline to apply: June 26, 2025
Location: Altadena/Pasadena
Eligible: Low-Income High School Seniors with GPA 3.0 or higher
|
The 2025 California wildfire season has left a path of devastation, with Pasadena and Altadena communities deeply impacted. Homes have been destroyed, families displaced, and entire neighborhoods left to rebuild in the wake of relentless fires. Beyond the immediate destruction, these wildfires have placed an immense financial and emotional strain on students and their families, making the pursuit of higher education feel more uncertain than ever.
Any high school senior from Pasadena or Altadena with a 3.0+ GPA who identifies as low-income is eligible to apply for this scholarship.
To apply, students must submit an essay and video describing the college of their dreams, why they wish to continue their education at that university, and how the 2025 wildfires have impacted their goals and aspirations.
About the scholarship
Understanding the immense challenges students face, New York Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman established the Marcus Stroman Scholarship, an initiative of his Height Doesn’t Measure Heart (HDMH) Foundation. The HDMH Foundation is dedicated to empowering in-need youth, helping them rise above their circumstances, reach their full potential, and achieve their dreams.
In its second year, the Marcus Stroman Scholarship now seeks to uplift students from Pasadena and Altadena, California, particularly those whose families have been impacted by the 2025 wildfires. This scholarship will provide two students with $25,000 each to help them pursue their college education without the added stress of financial uncertainty.
Marcus Stroman’s journey – both in baseball and in life – demonstrates the power of persistence, determination, and resilience. His college education at Duke University played a crucial role in shaping his success, and he remains a strong advocate for higher learning. Through this scholarship, he hopes to ease these financial burdens so that students can focus on excelling in college and beyond.
