E-CONNECT | JUNE 2024 UPDATE FROM THE ALTADENA LIBRARIES

The Main Library will open late at 12 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, due to staff training.
Lunch at the Library begins at 11:30 a.m. that day in the Community Room.
 
The Main Library will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, for Juneteenth.

The Bob Lucas Memorial Library is currently closed for renovations.

Six Things to Do with Your Altadena Library Card!
  1. Conduct scholarly research, talk to online tutors (for K-12) through Brainfuse, and get training and job help, all through our online databases.

  2. Watch movies and stream music with hoopla, read & listen to books on cloudLibrary, and peruse thousands of newspapers with pressreader. Access these apps here.

  3. Borrow, browse, pick up and return books and other materials at our vending machines at Prime Pizza in Altadena and the Main Library.

  4. Check out items like early equity kits, a yoto, or a hiking backpack (complete with hiking poles, state park pass and binoculars). Search our catalog for Library of Things at catalog.altadenalibrary.org.

  5. Register for Self-Service Extended Access — from 8 to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday at the Main Library — at altadenalibrary.org/extendedaccess.

  6. We also offer a Homebound Delivery Service for eligible Altadena residents. To learn about eligibility or to request the service, visit altadenalibrary.org/homebound.

Summer Reading Kickoff Event

You do not need to sign-up, show identification, or apply. Lunch will be served on a first come, first-served basis. The library offers these healthy meals in partnership with Pasadena Unified School District through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. We hope you will come for healthy lunches, summer reading, and free activities to help young minds and bodies grow and thrive.

Altadena Pride: 3rd Annual Altadena LGBTQ+ Pride Walkabout Opening Ceremony

Join us for Altadena Pride! The walk originates at Altadena Main Library at 10:00 a.m., winding through the community with events along the way, culminating at the Altadena Senior Center. 
 

   

We Invite You to Become a Literacy Tutor!

Our tutors empower adult learners by teaching basic reading, writing and functional literacy skills. After completing a self-paced, online training module and being matched with a learner, tutors and learners meet 1 to 2 hours per meeting at least once a week at the library or other location based on their schedules. Tutors must commit to a minimum of six months.

Friends of the Altadena Library Annual Meeting with Special Guest Speaker Author Ellen Snortland

TUESDAY, JUNE 4 | 6:00-7:30PM | MAIN LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM
 
Join the Friends of the Altadena Library (FOAL) at its annual meeting for an IN-PERSON event in the Community Room at the Main Library. FOAL will hold a short meeting to present its annual contribution to the Library and propose new Board Members for the coming year. Voting for Officers and Board Members is for members.
 
After that we are pleased to welcome a talk from author Ellen Snortland. Guests are welcome to attend the entire program. Refreshments will be served at this event.

The Ben Band

Join The Ben Band for some family-friendly songs! Ben sings about the animals native to his Australian homeland, including kookaburras, emus, wombats, and platypuses. He also sings about his alarm clock who likes waking him up, his cheese grater who hates grating cheese, and his guitar who wants more attention. The show ends with a celebration of books as the most magical objects of all. This is a Lunch at the Library event.

Second Saturday Concert: Conga & Co.

Join Altadena Library for a free indoor concert with Conga & Co. With a soulful-voiced frontman who sings directly from his heart to yours, and award-winning, original Reggae, Latin, and Funk songs, there is always a lot of love in the room at a Conga & Co. performance. 
 
Show starts at 7 p.m., and doors open no later than 6:45 p.m. You are allowed to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages. Food (El Patron) & drink (Ale House) also will be available for purchase. Registration is required. 
 
We recommend you arrive early to get a good seat.  No outside seating allowed inside the library.
 
The Second Saturday concert series is sponsored by the Friends of the Altadena Library and Altadena Library Foundation.

You will enjoy a guided meditation to release stress and clear away the mental chatter so we can then create freely from our hearts without judgment. Bring whatever you would like to work on for the last part of class. We will listen to music as we create and then share with the community!Ideas to bring: journaling, knitting, painting, sketching, coloring books, working on a book or script, poetry, scrapbook, vision board or whatever would bring you joy to create!

Follow along as artist Carlos Nieto teaches you to draw anime characters. All materials are provided. Program is for teens (ages 13-17).

Carlos Nieto is a former layout artist for the Simpsons and King Of The Hill. He developed Anime your Way after his own creative process. This is a Lunch at the Library event.

We Tell Stories: Earth Tales

Join us as We Tell Stories presents Earth Tales, a story of life and death, the earth and its inhabitants, ecology and the environment are intertwined in these stories from ancient cultures who lived in harmony with the earth. Hike with a Librarian!

Friday, June 14 • 8:30-11:30am

You will receive an email prior to the event with the meet-up location.

 
Librarians love books and spending time in nature and connecting with our community. This walk hike is approximately 4-5 miles long with minor elevation changes and uneven and unpaved ground.
 
Space is limited, and registration is required. 
 
You will be required to fill out a waiver of liability the morning of the hike.
Water will be provided but bringing your water bottle is highly recommended.

Eaton Canyon Trash Pick-up Hike for Teens

Saturday, June 15 • 8:30-11:00am • Meet-up in front of the Eaton Canyon Nature Center (1750 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107)
 
Come join us for an early morning Eaton Canyon hike to get some fresh air and to pick up trash on the trail! All pickup materials will be provided by Eaton Canyon. Meet-up and pick-up will be designated in front of the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. 
 
We will have limited snacks provided but please have your own water bottle. Space is limited, registration is required.
 
Volunteer hours will be provided to those in the Teen Volunteer Program.

Come meet us at Neon Retro Arcade in Old Town Pasadena for a 2-hour free play with other teens. At the arcade, you can play a variety of classic games and pinball machines. There will be library staff there to supervise and play games with you. This program is for teens 13-17 years old only.

The Library Bandit Puppet Show

Dipsie is excited to check out her favorite books from the library! But suddenly they are stolen by the bumbling Library Bandit who always wants what everyone else has. Now Dipsie is sad since she won’t get to read his stories. But, the many puppet friends and the kids in the audience lead them into fun and silly adventures where she comes face to face with the Bandit. It’s an interactive bonanza of fun with learning moments! Interactive fun for kids and families!

Need something fixed? The Pasadena Repair Cafe is back. 
 
Bring your item to be fixed and explain your issue to your fixer. The Repair Cafe team will try their best to fix it for free. While you wait for your item to be fixed, chat with the person fixing your item or other community members, or walk around while you wait and check out the Really, Really, Free Market! 
 
If you would like to bring items to the Really, Really, Free Market, please be sure the item is not broken, and it is small enough that people can carry it. Some items that you can bring to the Really, Really, Free Market: puzzles, games, toys, clothes, cook wear, etc.

Handmade Selves Exhibition
Through June 25
Main Library Community Room

Handmade Selves is an exhibition of senior projects created by the 2024 graduating class of the Pasadena Waldorf High School. Join us for an artist reception on Tuesday, May 14. The exhibition is on display at the Main Library from May 7 to June 25.
 
Works on display include a playable hand-built electric guitar, garments made from living plants, a choreography about emotions, photorealistic drawings of hands, time lapse footage of fungal growth, a piano composition about Hiroshima and more.
