The Bob Lucas Library will soon close for renovations!

The last day the library will be open is April 10, 2024, and we will break ground on April 18, 2024. The expansion & renovation should take about a year. To help us prepare for this exciting project, the Friends of the Altadena Library will host a special book sale at the Bob Lucas Library on Friday, April 12 & Saturday, April 13.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Is Back!

Help us celebrate as we relaunch 1000 Books Before Kindergarten on Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Altadena Main Library.

We will have a bilingual storytime 📖 from 10:30-11:00am and Curiosity Play Hour from 2:30-4:00pm. A book character mascot will make special appearances throughout the day! This program is for children ages 0-5 and their families.

The first 100 registrants will receive an animal hand puppet!

Mt. Lowe Chamber Players 18th Century Wind Octets

Wind Octets from the late 18th century were popular as entertainment music and as arrangements of popular operas in the days before recording. In additional to Mozart’s two octets, there are arrangements of Mozart’s operas “Don Giovanni,” “The Abduction from the Seraglio” and “the Marriage of Figaro” and one octet of Beethoven. We will select a program from this repertoire.

Women's History Month: The Forgotten Legacy of Mexican Culinary Pioneer Josefina Velázquez de León and Mexican Cuisine

Josefina Velázquez de León (1899-1968) was a Mexican entrepreneurial author, teacher, and cook who raised funds for social causes and empowered women within the domestic sphere of the kitchen. She created an empire unheard of in mid-20th century Mexico.
 
Largely forgotten after her death, she gave a national face to regional Mexican cuisine and symbolizes female empowerment and cultural enrichment.
 
ArtBites founder Maite Gomez-Rejon will talk about the powerhouse that Josefina was in an informal discussion. A tasting will be enjoyed after the program.

The Body's Midnight Community Read-Through

Join Boston Court Pasadena and the Altadena Library for a community read-through of The Body's Midnight, a new play by Tira Palmquist, directed by Jessica Kubzansky, premiering this April at Boston Court as a co-production with IAMA Theatre Company.
 
We invite you to read through the script, playing various roles in a round-robin interpretation of the play. Scripts will be provided, and no preparation is required.

Be Part of Our Children's Tiny Art Show!

 

We invite artists (ages 12 and under) to participate in our Tiny Art Show! Registration is required, and please register each child individually beginning Monday, March 4, as kit supplies are limited.

On Monday, March 25, you can pick up a take-home kit with supplies to create your very own miniature Earth Day-themed art piece. Once complete, you will return your painting to the Main Library.

Join the USC PAM Teen Ambassadors in exploring the museum and making art together! Go on a scavenger hunt to discover Asian artwork and create your own work of art in a printmaking workshop. Enjoy snacks, meet new people, and learn about upcoming events and opportunities at the museum. Registration is required.
 
Meet at the museum’s courtyard. Parking is free in the lot adjacent to the museum. Parents/chaperones can get free admission if they want to attend the museum while the students are in the workshop!
